16/01/2012 - Puma

Interview of Stefan D. Seidel

From the very beginning, starting with the construction and design phase even, we tried to use the best available environmental technologies for the building complex

Could you describe your job at PUMA?
I work for the PUMA.Safe Department (SAFE Stands for Social Accountability and Fundamental Environmental Standards). My job is quite interesting and involves implementing environmental standards at our supplier factories but also to help measuring and optimizing PUMA’s own sustainability performance.

What are the ecological highlights of the PUMAVision Headquarters?
From the very beginning, starting with the construction and design phase even, we tried to use the best available environmental technologies for the building complex. For example, the heating and cooling of the office building in particular is done by so-called ‘concrete core temperature control’: it works by having hot and cold water circulating through the floor and ceiling and therefore efficiently controlling the building’s basic temperature.

One of the building’s sustainable highlights is the use of solar energy. We use this for hot water generation, for example, and for our canteen. We also have three photovoltaic power stations on the roofs of the parking facility and the PUMA Store and factory outlet. We have also integrated some photovoltaic cells into the façade of the store, so you can actually see the energy generation we use from the outside. At the entrance of the store there is a screen that explains to the customer how much electricity the building is currently generating and has been generating over the last month. Apart from these initiatives, it is important to say that the operation of the building is carbon neutral.

How about your employees?
We fully integrate our employees in our sustainability initiatives on a daily basis. For example, our offices use recycled paper and double-sided printing, and we also educate our employees to reduce paper use - or even better not to use it at all.

Other examples are initiatives carried out through our cafeteria. We are part of the Meat Free Mondays Campaign, meaning that once per week there is no meat served in our canteen in order to educate our employees about this campaign and to help prevent climate change. Organic tea and coffee is also served there to promote a different consumption approach.

Regarding transportation, employees who come to work by public transport every day have their tickets refunded by PUMA and we constantly update our corporate car fleet in order to reduce our CO2 emission.
